What is Natural Immunity?

The immune system is designed to keep the body from becoming diseased. Natural immunity occurs when the body is balanced. Disease and sickness occurs when the body’s normal state of balance and harmony is disrupted. When a dog encounters something that throws it’s system out of balance, the dog’s immune system will automatically work to get the dog back to being balanced and healthy. This is how it works for all creatures, including humans.

But if we treat the dog with chemical medications when it gets sick, all it does is mask the symptoms and prevent the immune system from doing it’s job of healing the body. It becomes a vicious cycle. The dog exhibits a symptom of illness or disease, we give it the medication prescribed by the vet, and it masks the symptoms. Later, the dog gets another symptom (or the same one re-occurring), and then he gets another medication to mask the symptoms. The medication does not heal the body, it only gets rid of the body’s signs of being sick, but the body is still sick inside.

How Does a Dog Get Natural Immunity?

Basically, by following the laws of nature as outlined on our home page. This natural immunity is passed down from generation to generation in dogs that have not been vaccinated. Unfortunately, vaccine use has taken away this multi-generational immunity in dogs, and now it is much more common for a puppy to catch something like Parvo and not survive. Thankfully, we have not had this happen with our own dogs, but we have seen the ill effects of vaccines, chemical dewormers, poor nutrition, etc. in other ways.

The puppy is supposed to inherit immunity to things like Parvo and Distemper from antibodies in their mother’s milk, but unfortunately because we have generations of vaccinated dogs, there are still cases of litters getting sick while still nursing. It will take several generations of unvaccinated dogs to get dogs back to the point of not dying from Parvo or Distemper as puppies. In nature, if a puppy is not strong enough to survive, it is nature’s way of keeping the species alive (by not allowing weak animals to grow up and breed and produce weak offspring), and vaccines are our attempt to keep all puppies alive, even the ones that nature did not intend to survive. Unfortunately, even despite our best efforts, we can still end up with sick puppies. So vaccines are not actually doing what we intended them to do (keep puppies from dying from Parvo).

On the flip side, if we allow generations of dogs to have strong immune systems, the puppies that nature intends to survive, will be able to deal with sicknesses like Parvo and come out on top stronger than before. This results in true “herd immunity”. Veterinarians have found that unvaccinated puppies have a higher chance of overcoming Parvo because their immune systems have not been weakened by vaccines, chemical dewormers, etc.

In addition to inherited immunity, the immune system also develops throughout life. It is not a one and done thing. When they are born, they begin the process of building a strong immune system. What the dog is exposed to throughout it’s life affects how strong his immune system will be.

How Vaccines Are Dangerous

So why do we believe vaccines are harmful and dangerous? It has to do with several things: the way the vaccine works in the body, what the vaccine contains, and dosage.

When a body is exposed to a virus the natural way (through nose, mouth, etc.), the body has a series of natural barriers that allows it to mount a resistance to the disease it encounters. When the body is nourished and healthy, most of the time it is able to very effectively resist the virus on its own (or with the support of natural supplements) and in so doing it also becomes immune to that virus in the future (because it “remembers” the virus from it’s first exposure).

Vaccines are harmful because they bypass the body’s natural barriers that are set up to prevent infection, effectively preventing the body from mounting a natural resistance to the disease for which the vaccine is given. Vaccines (containing a large amount of virus particles compared to just a few particles in the natural way of being exposed to a virus) are usually injected into muscle or under the skin – NOT a natural way to be exposed to a disease! The vaccine allows the virus to skip all the natural barriers and enter the body through the back door, so to speak. The body doesn’t have time to mount a resistance, instead it is ambushed in a startling way, and even though the body tries to deal with the invasion, it has a harder time executing it’s defense plan because of the manner in which it encounters the invader. This can cause the immune system to make mistakes, and it puts it on high-alert to things that are not actually dangerous. All of this ultimately leads to a damaged immune system.

In addition to this, vaccines contain more than just a virus. Some of them contain multiple viruses (in combination vaccines), which is unnatural because you don’t usually get more than one virus in nature attacking the body at the same time. Some of the vaccines contain viruses that aren’t even supposed to be in there, but were inside of the cells that were used to grow the virus for the vaccine.

Vaccines also contain something called an adjuvant. An adjuvant’s job is to make the vaccine seem more like a threat to the body, because the virus by itself may not seem threatening enough to the body to provide adequate immunity. Adjuvants are usually things like aluminum or mercury.

Vaccines are grown on a tissue culture of cells, from a body part (like kidneys). The virus in the culture infects the cells, reproducing itself into hundreds of more viruses that end up in the fluid of the culture. A vaccine contains a sample of this fluid that is extracted from the culture (since we can’t separate and extract just the virus itself) and placed in the vaccine vial. The fluid contains the virus along with all sorts of “junk” like cell debris, growth medium fed to the cells (which contain animal proteins), and DNA. When we inject this fluid into a dog, the immune system reacts to all the “junk” in the fluid, and sometimes the immune system creates antibodies against the dog’s own normal body tissues (such as kidneys, collagen, or DNA, according to studies mentioned in Dr. Pitcairn’s book), and this is how we get auto-immune disorders and allergies in dogs (and people). An auto-immune disorder is simply the body attacking it’s own normal body tissues.

Vaccines are not supposed to be given to dogs that are sick or weak or malnourished, yet sometimes vets administer shots regardless of the dog’s health status, if they are “due” for their booster. This weakens the immune system further – while it’s trying to fight something off already, we add another toxin load on top of that for it to deal with.

So what we have is a hodgepodge of foreign material (including animal tissue) injected into the dog’s body in an unnatural way (when the body is already weakened by previous vaccines, poor nutrition, and sometimes even while it is currently fighting an infection), bypassing the dog’s natural defense barriers. The result is a weakened immune system that ultimately lead to things like cancer, allergies, shortened lifespans, etc. We can see this is true just by looking at the general health of dogs nation-wide. I used to own a dog that, after I rehomed him to a friend, ended up dying from cancer. We sold a Shiba puppy from one of our first litters, who ended up losing a patch of hair at the injection site of a vaccine when visiting their new vet. There are many stories from veterinarians about puppies dying from things like Parvo very soon after receiving their shots. And on the flipside you have puppies that were not vaccinated that recovered from Parvo in only a few days.

The last thing to consider is that vaccines are given irresponsibly, because they use the same dose for a 5 lb. chihuahua as they do for a 100 lb. lab! In addition, each dog has different genetics and therefore all dogs react differently to the toxins in the vaccine. Could this by why vaccines are not 100% effective (which means they are not giving our pets 100% immunity)?

There have been no long term studies to see how vaccines affect dogs, or how different breeds or sizes of dogs react to different vaccines. In reality, there really is no proof that vaccines are worth the risk.

More Things to Consider

1) If your dog already has immunity to parvo, giving the shot will cause an outbreak of parvo. (They should titer test prior to any shot, at the very least.)

2) Parvo has many strains, and many mutated strains that we don’t even vaccinate for.

3) Parvo vaccines shed, putting all immunocompromised dogs at risk.

4) Parvo is NOT a death sentence, and NOT every puppy or dog will get parvo.

6) Vaccines are one of the most profitable industries in the world. There is a huge financial incentive for vets to give shots.

At your vet appointment, the vet should be disclosing each ingredient in the vaccine and the long term risk to your dog’s body. Unfortunately, most vets have not researched past what they were taught in school, and they have not researched vaccine safety themselves. In addition, your vet should NEVER vaccinate your dog when it is visiting the vet for another reason and is not in the best of health. Vaccines are meant to be given to healthy animals, but many vets vaccinate sick animals when they are taken to the vet for another problem.

What This Means For You

Please research this on your own very carefully before getting any shots for your new puppy! Visit our page Keeping Your Puppy Healthy for more information on keeping your puppy healthy without vaccines.

We strongly believe that our puppies belong to their new families after they leave our care and that it is your responsibility to take care of your puppy the best you can, so we will not refuse to sell to you if you are planning on vaccinating. However, we strongly encourage you to consider avoiding vaccines, or only doing delayed vaccinations, if you feel that you must vaccinate.

What you feed your dog, what toxins are in his environment, and whether he gets vaccinated or not, all affect how healthy he will be. Because of this, we cannot guarantee anything about the health of the pup after it leaves our care, because there will be things out of our control that could end up making him unhealthy, even if he leaves our care perfectly healthy. Health guarantees look good, but they don’t actually prevent a puppy from getting sick or developing a disease.

More About the Cause of Disease

“The Contagion Myth” by Thomas S. Cowan, MD, and Sally Fallon Morell is an excellent book that questions the modern view of germs, and the cause of disease. It’s very well referenced, and cites studies and research done by doctors. Cowan brings up such interesting points as: no one has ever isolated a virus (and the people who claim to have done it actually haven’t), the rise and fall of polio corresponded to the rise and fall of the usage of DDT (which is a chemical that poisons the central nervous system), and that pandemics always followed an advance in electricity (such as the telegraph lines, radar, satellites, cell phones, etc.) and much much more. He talks about a doctor that tried very hard to infect himself and others with smallpox and was unable to.

The book makes a strong case that disease is caused by exposure to toxins (sometimes with lack of nutrition as a major cofactor). I highly recommend the book! I don’t think he’s 100% right about everything, but he brings up enough research and quotes to make you question many things we’ve been told about health.

I’d like to share the following excerpt with you because it talks about the rabies vaccine (note that Robert Koch mentioned is the “father of modern bacteriology/microbiology”):

The injection of puree of diseased brain tissue into the brains of dogs was the method preferred by Louis Pasteur to establish microbial causation of rabies; and indeed, injecting smooshed brains into their heads often made them foam at the mouth and die. Many of Pasteur’s contemporaries disagreed strongly that rabies (also called hydrophobia) was a contagious disease and pointed out that the vaccine often caused great harm to animals and people – even Pasteur’s contemporary germ theorist Robert Koch discouraged the use of the rabies vaccine. Vets of the era believed that dogs became “rabid” when they were starved and mistreated.

Dr. Matthew Woods of Philadelphia noted that “at the Philadelphia dog pound, where on average more than 6,000 vagrant dogs are taken annually, and where the catcher and keepers are frequently bitten while handling them, not one case of hydrophobia [rabies] has occured during its entire history of twenty-five years, in which time 150,000 dogs have been handled.” During the 1960s, researchers succeeded in inducing symptoms of rabies in experimental animals by putting them in bat caverns where they could breathe the toxic stultifying vapors of bat guano, later claiming to have isolated an “airborne rabies virus”. To test whether this so-called “virus” caused rabies, one researcher “inoculated [mice] intracerebrally”. Fifty percent died within forty-eight hours, but none developed rabies.

(This excerpt alone cites three sources in the book.)
